You can find the axe for basil on the right of the second screen. You can find the timber for the boat in the very top area. You can find the vines across the third screen. You can find the paddles across the fourth screen, to the left and below the third. The best strategy is to run into every animal to clear them whilst basil works, protecting him before they even come near him. If you are still struggling, go to the tent in the center of the map and interact with the wizard npc, they will cryptically help you by telling you identifiers for each map, here are the maps via their name the wizard gives you:
